READERS ADD TO HIP PARADE
We made our picks for what’s
hip in Halifax – and we wanted to know what you thought.
After our story Hip Parade
two weeks ago, readers wrote in to tell us about their favourite
hot spots, mentioning in no particular order: The Old Triangle
Ale House on Prince Street (“The bands are amazing,
the dancing lively, and the atmosphere is always friendly”);
Club NRG on Gottingen Street (“absolutely packed and
great”); the Marquee Club also on Gottingen Street
(“the place rocks!”) and the Copacabana at Pizza
Corner, for its salsa and meringue dancing.
But Artie Irwin of Halifax
convinced us with his letter nominating Epicurious Morsels
on Young Street.
“All of the restaurants
listed are excellent, but there is another hidden gem –
Epicurious Morsels,” informs Irwin, who gets our gift
basket loaded with cool books and CDs. (The other restaurants
mentioned in our story include Chives Canadian Bistro, the
Highlife Café, and Fid.)
“It’s tastefully
decorated, and with a wonderful menu that offers a variety
of specialties, including sumptuous soups. I will not divulge
my habitual selections, but I keep going back, which is
self explanatory.”
Epicurious Morsels is Jim
Hanusiak and Linda Baldwin’s first restaurant venture,
open for four years in Halifax’s historic Hydrostones.
Hanusiak worked in the aqua culture business designing fish
hatcheries and fish farms for more than 20 years before
deciding to follow his dreams and open a restaurant. With
Baldwin handling front-of-house duties, Hanusiak oversees
the kitchen and its French-Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant
also has its own smoke house.
On the menu, you can find
dishes such as ginger salmon in filo pastry, lobster strudel,
and Louisiana turkey pie. There’s also brunch on weekends,
with house specialties including Eggs Benedict, potato pancakes,
stuffed French toast, and Belgian waffles.
Mmmmmm. But it’s not just the food that prompted Irwin
to write in – he loves the music, too.
“A wonderful bonus,
which is a rarity, is that the boss has an excellent selection
of CDs, which makes it difficult for customers to go back
to work after a sumptuous repast.”
Epicurious Morsels’
music collection includes “a little bit of Latino,
Tony Bennett and k.d.lang, and my Jazz in Paris series,”
informs Hanusiak. The series includes artists Earl Hines,
Rene Thomas, Stephane Grappelli, Nat King Cole, and Stan
Getz.
